Technology is ingrained in our day-to-day lives and people produce vast amounts of information on personal computers, cellphones/smartphones, the internet, and their vehicles.
90% of U.S. households contain at least one of the following devices: smartphone, desktop/laptop computer, tablet or streaming media device, with the typical (median) American household containing five of them. And nearly one-in-five American households (18%) are “hyper-connected” – meaning they contain 10 or more of these devices. According to a survey conducted within the fourth quarter of 2016 by Pew Research, a third of Americans live in a household with three or more smartphones.
In a survey conducted May 19 to September 5, 2023, it was found that most U.S. adults today use the internet (95%), have a smartphone (90%) or subscribe to high-speed internet at home (80%). (Pew Research). Pew Research has also found nine-in-ten people now own a smartphone, up from just 35% in their first survey of smartphone ownership conducted in 2011.
Vehicles are essentially computers on wheels. A vehicles “black box” collects not only information such as the use, functionality, and location history of your vehicle, but when connected to a cellphone, may contain your personal data as well. More than 800 car models support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is compatible with nearly every major car brand and is in over 200 million cars. Such data is being used in civil and criminal cases where, among others, the vehicle’s location history and call/text records are being called into question.
What do these numbers and rate of growth tell us? They show that people utilize technology more and more and that these devices are relied upon heavily in our day-to-day life. There is a great chance that an electronic device, such as a smartphone, will contain data related to a crime, civil matter, or even hold information that can exonerate someone.
Unfathomable perhaps, but for Granite Discovery, not insurmountable.
